The next morning, Elena barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the glowing red lens staring directly at her from the streetlight.
By breakfast, she had convinced herself that maybe it had all been a nightmare.
Until her phone buzzed.
Nina: Meet me. Now.
Within minutes, Elena was sitting on Nina's bed.
"You didn't sleep either?" Elena asked.
Nina slowly shook her head.
"I kept hearing that voice."
"Recording detected."
The room fell silent.
"It happened," Elena whispered.
"It was real."
Nina nodded.
"We have to tell everyone."
That afternoon, all of their cousins gathered in Conrad and Matt's backyard.
Sofie folded her arms.
"So... you woke us up for this?"
Jeremy sighed.
"Please tell me this isn't about aliens."
"It isn't," Elena answered.
"It's worse."
For the next fifteen minutes, Elena and Nina explained everything.
The flash.
The moving security camera.
The lasers.
The flying machine.
The mechanical voice.
When they finished...
Silence.
Then—
Matt burst into laughter.
"Oh, that's good."
Conrad joined him.
"I almost believed you."
Peter looked excited.
"So... killer robots?"
"No!" Elena snapped.
"I'm serious!"
Jeremy rubbed his forehead.
"You expect us to believe a street camera flew into the sky?"
"It did!"
"It destroyed phones!"
"It spoke!"
Sofie looked at Nina.
"You believe this too?"
"Every word."
The cousins exchanged confused looks.
Finally Jeremy shrugged.
"Fine."
"If you're telling the truth..."
"Prove it."
Elena smiled.
"I knew you'd say that."
They made a plan.
At exactly 12:00 AM, everyone would sneak out after their parents had gone to sleep.
They would meet on Nina's terrace.
The terrace was on the fourth floor—high enough to see the entire street and the camera mounted on the pole below.
"If it comes," Elena said, "someone records it."
"And if it attacks?" Peter asked.
Elena held up a bucket.
"We throw water on it."
Matt blinked.
"Water?"
"It's electronic."
"It should short-circuit."
Conrad laughed.
"Honestly..."
"...that's actually not a bad idea."
Soon everyone had a job.
Matt would record.
Conrad would keep watch.
Peter would carry extra water bottles.
Jeremy would bring flashlights.
Sofie would call for help if anything happened.
Nina and Elena would watch the camera.
Everything was planned.
Or so they thought.
11:58 PM
One by one, shadows climbed onto Nina's terrace.
Everyone whispered.
Everyone looked nervous.
Even Matt wasn't joking anymore.
The neighborhood below was completely silent.
Only one streetlight remained on.
And beneath it...
The security camera.
Completely still.
"Maybe they were right," Matt whispered.
"It's just a camera."
Elena didn't answer.
Her eyes never left it.
Minutes passed.
Nothing happened.
Peter yawned.
"I think we're freezing for nothing."
Then...
Tick.
Everyone froze.
"Did you hear that?" Sofie whispered.
Tick...
The camera moved.
Only a few degrees.
Its black lens slowly turned upward.
Toward the terrace.
Toward them.
"It sees us..." Nina whispered.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then...
The bolts holding the camera to the pole loosened one after another.
CLANG...
CLANG...
CLANG...
The camera lifted into the air.
No wires.
No support.
Just floating.
Peter dropped his water bottle.
"Oh my God..."
Its hidden propellers unfolded with a metallic click.
WHIRRRRR...
The machine rose silently into the dark sky.
Straight toward the terrace.
Matt finally remembered his job.
"I'm recording."
His hands shook as he lifted his phone.
The recording timer appeared.
00:01
The camera stopped only a few feet away.
Rain clouds rolled across the moon.
Thunder echoed in the distance.
A cold wind swept across the terrace.
The cousins were shivering.
But the camera...
Didn't move an inch.
It hovered perfectly still.
Its glowing red eye slowly turned toward Elena.
Closer.
Closer.
Until it was only inches from her face.
She could see her own terrified reflection inside its lens.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Nobody dared speak.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
The first raindrops began to fall.
Jeremy stared at the machine in disbelief.
"Nina..."
"...you said water would stop it."
Nina swallowed hard.
Rain poured harder.
The camera remained perfectly stable.
Not a single spark.
Not a single glitch.
Jeremy looked at Elena with fear in his eyes.
"It's raining..."
"...nothing happened."
The red lens became brighter.
Much brighter.
Then, for the first time...
The camera spoke directly to them.
"Evidence collection detected."
Matt's phone vibrated violently in his hand.
Every screen on the terrace suddenly lit up at once.
One by one...
Every phone displayed the same message.
LOCATION CONFIRMED.
The camera's lens narrowed.
Then, in a cold mechanical voice, it said—
"Witnesses... cannot be erased."
"Observation Protocol... has begun."
The red light flared.
And every phone screen went black.
To Be Continued...
